How to increase my Internet speed

It’s very easy to test your broadband Internet speed. Still, there are some things to keep in mind. It's very important to know that, during high traffic period your ISP will suffer from high loads and will surely not be able to give the maximum speed. Therefore you’d best make different speed tests at different time , to check whether you ever reach the maximum speed. Often your Internet speed is slow because other applications are using it. To test if other applications , such as anti-virus and other updates, are using the Internet without your knowing, Click Start, Click Run. Type "cmd" (without quotes). Type "netstat -b 5 > activity.txt". After some time hold down Ctrl and press C. This has made a file with a list of all programs using your Internet connection. Open activity.txt to see the program list.

Speedtest.net is ideal place to test your Internet speed. They work through servers all over the world, so you can connect to a server near you, which gains the accuracy of your result.

Call your Internet service provider (ISP). Sometimes you just have bad service. They can mostly tell if your connection is anadequate without having a technician come to your home. Just be polite and ask about improving your speed.

You could also check out performance tables in Internet magazines or on review web sites. You may discover that another ISP could offer you faster speeds. You can also see performance tables in Internet magazines or on online review sites. You may find another ISP offering you faster speeds.

Keep in mind that the further you live from the telephone exchange, the slower the Internet speed will be. Check out your phone line by calling your home phone provider - a faulty line can slow your broadband connection.

As you can see, Internet speed does not only depend on your ISP, it also depends on the hardware and software used on your computer. If you are have hardware provided by your ISP, there shouldn’t be a trouble.

Maintain your computer
You can speed up your Internet connection by tuning up your computer using some valuable tools called Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup and ScanDisk. To use these, click on ‘Start’ and then go to ‘All Programs>Accessories>System Tools’. Scan your computer for malware, and empty your recycle bin. A remarkably slow Internet is regularly the only sign that your PC is infected with viruses or other malware. Erase old files and temporary files. Never let the free space on your C: drive to be less than 10% of the total size or twice the RAM memory. A good maintained computer will work much better than a PC that has never had any maintenance.

Check your home network equipment
If you have several computers using the same connection, make sure all the computers are physically connected to a router or switch, and not just to a hub. Hubs are low-level equipment, while routers are know to prioritize and direct Internet traffic effectively. Sometimes restarting (unplugging and replugging the electric power on) your home network or your router can increase you Internet speed. This may seem evident, but you should connect to the Internet with an Ethernet port, instead of a serial, parallel or USB port. If Ethernet is not a choice, I would suggest to update your hardware.

Optimize your cache and/or temporary Internet files
These files ameliorate your Internet connection performance by not downloading the same file again and again. Whenever you erase the temporary files, they must be downloaded again when you visit that web site. If you disable the cache, then it must be downloaded every time you watch the page that uses it. This can be set by opening Internet Explorer, clicking on "Tools" at the top and selecting "Internet Options". On the General tab, click the "Settings" button next to Temporary Internet Files. Set a check mark for newer versions to manage downloading new versions "Automatically". Set the amount of disk space to use to 2% of your total hard disk size. On Firefox, click "Tools" then "Options," and go to the privacy tab. Then click on the Cache tab inside this to set it to automatic.

Upgrade your computer and your router equipment
If your PC is slow, it doesn't matter how fast your Internet connection is, the whole thing will just appear slow. You can only access the Internet as fast as your computer will let you to.Older routers may be underpowered, so that even still the theoretical speed is 10 Mbps, the processor on the router is too weak to achieve top speed.
