VLC Media Player

VLC (VideoLAN) Media Player is a versatile media player that can play almost any type of media file. On top of playing media files, it can also record video and audio streams. The player is lightweight, fast and easy to use.
For years I have been a fan of Mediaplayer Classic Homecinema because it loads a lot faster than Windows Mediaplayer, is less resource intensive, can normalize audio levels in videos, and can download subtitles. However, MPC (mediaplayer calssic) had some downsides. You have to select a specific video renderer in the settings (out of a dozen) to be able to see and download subtitles. It also does not properly support multiple audio channels in mkv files, and it crashes too often. So it was time for me to look for an alternative.
VLC Media Player supports all the features that MPC has and even more. The most important features for me were audio normalizing, subtitles downloading and a low impact on the system. VLC had almost all of these features, except downloading of subtitles. However, using a plugin found here, you can get an extra option in your right-click menu to search for and download subtitles. Note that this feature can only work with the default skin. The skin you see above is called eDark VLC (my favorite) and can be found on this page.
