Many people who have web sites, blogs or ad campaigns like to talk about “niches”. No matter how you pronounce it, it means the same thing. If you want to know how Wikipedia explains a niche market, you can see the definition below.
A niche market is the subset of the market on which a specific product is focusing. So the market niche defines the specific product features aimed at satisfying specific market needs, as well as the price range, production quality and the demographics that is intended to impact. It is also a small market segment. For example, sports channels like STAR Sports, ESPN, STAR Cricket, and Fox target a niche of sports lovers.
However, all you need to know is that “Riches are in Niches!”… In this blog post I’m going to cover a few different reasons why it’s important for you to have your own blog niche and how you and your blog might fail if you don’t!
Why do you need to be in a niche?
First lets answer the question of why people use the internet… they either want to buy something, research something or be entertained. It’s really that simple. With that same thought in mind, if you have an extremely generic blog, why would anyone ever want to visit your site. If you are in a niche of your own, such as “reviewing wordpress themes”, everyone will hopefully end up on your web site when they are searching for wordpress themes in the search engines.
Without getting too complicated and ahead of ourselves, a niche will keep your blog on target and allow you to focus on giving your audience what they want.
How to make money in a niche
Let’s again think back to creating a generic web site or blog that covers topics on everything. Who the heck would want to advertise on a site that has no pure basis or target audience, low end trash advertisers… that’s who! The money you can make within a niche market is much better than what you can make with a general audience site. Remember we were just talking about how a “wordpress themes review” blog would get everyone who is interested in finding the latest wordpress themes? You can be wordpress theme designs and web hosting companies would pay top dollar for advertising space on your blog with this tight of a focus.
Is it ok not to have a niche?
In many cases it is fine for a web site or blog not to have a niche, but in these cases the site owner will likely be blogging for personal use, as a hobby or have no intention of making money with their site. Many times we will come across blogs that started out as a hobby, then slowly turned into a business. This is something that can be dangerous, especially if you are using your name as the domain name. Before turning a personal blog into a business or revenue generating blog, this about the options of starting a new blog and keeping the focus on that tight niche topic.
Now that you have a better understanding on what a niche market is and how it can help your blogging and business efforts, be sure to figure out what your niche is (if you don’t know already), and continue to drill down on targeted content. In the end you will find that there really are riches in niches!
